Babette’s New Friends

We are delighted here at Babette and Friends that the little lambs arrived next door!  Trying to draw the little creatures without letting them know of my presence was not an easy task. While hiding behind the bushes I felt like a predator. They are such alert and scared things!
Every spring new "ma ma ba ba ma" sounds trickle from the hill to our delight. Tiny hoofs run in unison to the little pound stop at its edge for a refreshing drink then they munch and munch all day. They are bred for their milk thank goodness and not for their meat, otherwise we would have been too sad. Babette gets most excited here on the other side of the stone wall, she puts her front paws up and wings her tail. But, one look at her, they glide down the hill like pink yarns away from us. Of course I don't let her join them as she would herd them back inside their stable!!! She finally has become a fierce sheepdog!

May doves sprinkle sleeping dust

May butterflies fly and thrust

May the moon keep her shiny bust

May you grow an inch in a gust

Henri and Henrietta

A new story is coming soon to Tales. Keep an eye out!

I love visualizing my characters as they begin to take shape—sketching the fairy tale, making collages, and wandering around inside the story before it fully exists. I almost never illustrate after writing. I work the other way around.

Usually, a story pops into my head, and as I tell it to myself, I start drawing and making collages. More often than not, the story changes completely along the way—and usually for the better. Sometimes the story disappears altogether, and all that survives is a lovely collage.

And occasionally, in a rare act of mercy toward humanity, I throw the whole thing into the garbage.
